Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a creative, highly talented Staff Estimator to support the Energy, Industrial Engineering Business. This position will be based in Denver, Colorado.

The successful candidate will possess the demonstrated skills and experience necessary to:

  • Efficiently deliver timely, responsive and responsible estimates that are consistent, objectively prepared and reliably accurate for their intended purpose. The end product being a “priced execution plan”.

  • Support multiple estimates simultaneously by implementing a thorough and methodical estimating process.

  • Work efficiently and effectively with project management and other engineering discipline leads to execute project work on schedule and within budget.

  • Support and present estimates to internal management and clients to ensure alignment on the estimate basis, execution plan, estimated cost, and risk/contingency in evaluation.

Job Summary:

  • Responsible for activities related to estimating all elements of project cost including labor (manual and non-manual), materials and permanent equipment, supplies, consumables and expenses, construction equipment rental and operating costs, contingency, escalation, program risk, etc.

  • Primary Responsibilities:

  • Individual incumbents may be responsible for cross discipline application or may concentrate in one or more of the Estimating disciplines including Civil/Structural, Mechanical/Piping, and Architectural.

  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of order of magnitude, preliminary, definitive, change orders and check estimates using appropriate methods and techniques.

  • Prepares equipment and material take-off.

  • Utilizes the appropriate company and industry historical data for costing estimates.

  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of project and discipline estimate summaries.

  • Prepares or assists in the preparation of the Basis of Estimate.

  • Participates in estimate reviews.

  • Establishes and maintains cost databases and product line specific parametric analysis tools.

  • ​Knowledgeable of the Company estimating systems and processes.

  • Understands estimating terminology and measures and recognizes estimating processes/project actions that may impact the project.

  • Participates with management in development of strategies and plans.

  • Participates in analyzing and using estimations to predict key project issues.

  • Assists in the evaluation of business opportunities and potential profitability.

  • Understands construction means, methods, and sequences-multiple disciplines.

  • Supervises junior staff through task development, establishing and maintaining goals and expectations, and documenting performance related issues and achievements.

  • Identifies and develops talent.

  • Actively participates in all staffing issues affecting their area of responsibility.

  • Assists in tracking action items.

  • This is a supervisory/technical specialist position responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising the work of subordinates under the direction of a manager or functions as a technical expert.

  • Prepares or assist in the preparation of ROIC and IRR forecasts.

  • May work directly with contractor to resolve technical matters during negotiation and contract execution.

  • Prepares crew build-ups and production rate determinations.

  • Determines construction equipment selection.

  • Possesses a working knowledge of planning and scheduling.

  • Understands company cost structure (overheads, G&A, insurances).

  • Develops Work Breakdown Structures.

  • Capable of managing the preparation of an estimate.

  • Leads Project Team estimate reviews.

  • Evaluates suitability of scope and execution plan for basis of estimate.

  • Initiates the preparation of an Estimate Plan (approach, techniques, level of effort, cost, schedule), Basis of Estimate and qualifications.

  • Prepares bid tabulations responding to the customer/Request for Proposal requirements.

  • Collects, analyzes and archives project data. Develops historical documentation.

  • Develops current project estimate comparisons with previous performance and market benchmark data.

  • Helps prepare information for Executive Review Committee presentations.

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS + 8 years of estimating experience supporting engineering and/or construction projects for the execution of industrial construction projects or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering, construction, or related field.

  • Strong understanding of project planning and scheduling.

  • Strong understanding of indirect costs such as construction management, field staff, temporary construction facilities, construction equipment, etc.

  • Previous experience as an estimator for an EPC industrial company and/or an owner of Oil & Gas facility.

  • Experience with mechanical piping systems and civil/structural for Oil & Gas industrial projects is desired.

  • Previous experience preparing estimates during Pre FEED, FEED and Detail design including knowledge of required engineering deliverables and estimating methodologies at each stage of design.

  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

  • Proficient knowledge using estimating software such as WinEstimator and Aspen Capital Cost Estimator or similar estimating tool.
