What You'll Be Doing As a Sales Manager
HVAC Sales Managers promote and sell heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment (HVAC) of industrial size to commercial accounts. Much of this work involves finding good matches of equipment output and efficiency to match buildings and interior work areas. These managers are responsible for ensuring that they provide optimum climate control/ventilation equipment for the particular setting without creating wasteful cost overruns for the purchaser or contractor, while also ensuring that the system recommendations meet the needs of the building.
HVAC Sales Managers typically work with construction managers or managing contractors, either on new construction of a commercial space or a remodel or renovation. The contractor will provide a rough overview of the design specifications for the workspace and expected climate needs, and then seek a competitive bid from the sales manager to provide equipment and installation. The HVAC sales manager will then use a variety of intricate calculations regarding airflow and aerodynamics to find the best match. When working through these calculations, the HVAC sales manager will consider not only the main machinery, air conditioners, heat pumps, or exhaust equipment, but also the placement of ductwork, blowers, vents, and items like compressor capacity and condenser requirements to achieve the climate environment specified by the owner of the workspace or the construction manager and designers. These managers also consider installation costs by labor and submit the best competitive bids on the work.
To work as an HVAC sales manager, candidates should have a strong educational background in an area such as mechanical or industrial engineering or field experience in commercial HVAC work. Most HVAC sales managers split time between office work, fieldwork, and even out-of-office travel on occasion.
