JOB SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent, engages in all aspects of golf course maintenance and facility maintenance.
The City of Lakewood is currently recruiting variable employees for this position. A variable employee is an at-will employee who works in a seasonal or temporary capacity. Their work schedule is based on business need. This position would be a part-time non benefitted position.
Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Major Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities)
Responsible for the care and condition of the golf course.
Functions include: mowing turf, restroom cleaning, facility repair, painting, minor construction, trash pick-up, sign installation and participating in short term projects.
Maintains golf equipment and facilities (including clubhouse and restroom on the course) and features, ensuring safety and cleanliness.
Maintains cart paths to keep in safe and useable condition.
Operates City-owned equipment and hand tools.
Participates in snow removal from parking lots, sidewalks and bike paths in the shoulder season.
May be specifically assigned to an area of responsibility (mowing, trimming, trash removal, fairway, greens. etc.).
Performs other duties as assigned.
IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS
Hand mowing and trimming.
Installs and removes signage as needed.
Assists with Golf tournament or special events as needed.
Upkeep of tools, vehicles and other maintenance equipment.
May be required to assist with hand watering and setting up the course.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Supervision Received:
Receives general supervision from the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent.
Supervision Given:
At times may be designated as a lead position and have limited supervision of other temporary part time staff.
Essential Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience:
Previous experience in golf or parks maintenance (minimum of one season).
Licensure/Certification/Registration:
Valid drivers license, with good driving record.
KSA's and Physical/Mental Reqs
OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of golf course maintenance practices and golf course/parks equipment responsibilities.
Ability to exhibit leadership skills.
Ability to perform duties with minimal instruction and oversight.
Must have ability to work as a team member as well as independently. Ability to use hand tools and power equipment.
Ability to communicate effectively with the pro shop staff and public.
Background check may be required.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Lifting and Carrying:
Must be able to lift, carry and/or maneuver rocks, signs, fertilizer, concrete, trash bags and tools that weigh up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis.
Must occasionally lift the following that may weigh between 10 and 50 pounds: rocks, tools, post pounders, signs, post removers, trash bags, post-hole diggers, logs, lumber, and animal carcasses.
Must occasionally lift with assistance the following that may weigh between 51 and 75 pounds: fertilizer, concrete, rocks, canoes, animal carcasses, logs and trash bags.
Will occasionally lift with assistance (two-person lift), the following that may weigh 75 pounds and up: fertilizer bags, concrete bags, picnic tables, animal carcasses, rocks, logs, buoys, trash bags and barriers.
Pushing and Pulling:
Must occasionally push and pull mowers, posts, fences, water trailer and equipment.
Body Positions:
Work requires some sitting in trucks, office and equipment
Work requires frequent standing, walking, pushing and pulling or mowers.
Work requires frequent moving about the golf course for up to 8 hours per day.
Work requires frequent: pinching, gripping (when driving, pulling signs and working with tools); reaching for tools, ladders, materials, etc., and frequent climbing in and out of vehicle up to 60 times per day and some climbing on ladders.
Work requires frequent bending, kneeling, balancing.
Work requires occasional crawling as well as occasional maneuvering and/or balancing on ladders.
Requires occasional pushing to set posts and fences, moving heavy bags and equipment.
Work may include running in emergency situations.
Manipulates tools and construction materials.
Hearing:
Must be able to respond to in-person requests and to communicate via two-way radio.
Vision:
Uses vision to read written job related information, policies and procedures.
MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Mathematics:
Basic math skills preferred for calculating construction and landscaping measurements.
Remembering:
Must know and follow proper lifting procedures.
Remember rules, regulations and policies, have ability to locate resources.
Language Ability:
Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with visitors and city staff.
Reasoning:
Must be able to take direction and follow instruction from supervisor.
Must be able to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed frequently in outdoor environment in all temperatures and weather conditions.
Must arrive to work on time wearing shirt and hat provided by the golf course staff.
Manner of dress includes long pants appropriate for assigned job duties; in lieu of long pants, may wear solid-colored shorts (khaki-colored preferred). May not wear gym shorts or cut- offs.
Must wear shoes/footwear adequate for job duties assigned.
