Sr. Manufacturing Engineer – Automation

Position Type: Direct Hire

Position Location: Boulder, CO

Position Salary: $125,000 – $140,000 Base (Depending on Experience) + Bonus


  • Lead and support the successful development of automated processes to manufacture products that meet customer requirements
  • Collaborate with Operations and Quality personnel to develop the necessary fixtures, tooling, automation software and documentation for the successful launch of products in full-scale manufacturing
  • Implement new automation technologies and manufacturing capabilities to reduce cost, improve manufacturing efficiency and better meet customer needs
  • Maintain floor presence on a regular basis to provide automation and manufacturing assistance as required to support unexpected downtime and product changeovers, ensuring consistent production and minimizing downtime
  • Analyze existing manufacturing processes for capability, stability and quality, and recommend improvements
  • Research and recommend equipment and technology to support cell manufacturing
  • Provide floor support for automation systems, which includes setup, adjustment, troubleshooting and maintenance of robotic assembly and vision inspection equipment
  • Identify tooling needed to manufacture products and ensure on-time procurement of tooling for validation
  • Perform detailed process analysis (e.g. time studies, process mapping) to identify process improvement opportunities
  • Support the analysis of production flow, equipment utilization and efficiencies through the application of fundamental Lean manufacturing techniques
  • Support the successful manufacturing of products after release to the production floor
  • Develop automated manufacturing processes for new products and product changes
  • Design and model fixtures for work-holding, inspection, and assembly of new products
  • Interface with tooling suppliers and outside fabricating shops to successfully develop and manufacture fixtures
  • Facilitate the flow of prototype and qualification work-in-process through development, production, and outside vendor work centers
  • Manage the validation of processes to customer requirements through the coordination and monitoring of qualification builds
  • Provide direct feedback to customers on the manufacturability of new products
  • Use templates and standard practice to develop process and quality documentation for the manufacture of new products
  • Know and follow all safety requirements
  • Provide task status and development updates to Program Managers and supervisors
  • Understand and adhere to the Quality Management System (QMS)
  • Assist in the review and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) of product defects and manufacturing issues
  • Train production associates in the work processes developed by the engineering team
  • Travel to other site locations, dependent upon needs and maintain flexibility with daily work schedule


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience; Higher education preferred.
  • 5 + years of manufacturing experience and the ability to program and troubleshoot a variety of automation systems, including:
    • ABB robotics using RobotStudio software
    • Allen Bradley PLC using RSLogix and RSLinx software
    • Cognex vision systems using Insight and EasyBuilder software
  • Familiarity with OEE concepts and reporting
  • Working knowledge of EN ISO 13485 and FDA CFR820 preferred.
  • Fundamental knowledge of machining
  • Ability to read and create detailed part drawings with GD&T
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and familiarity with PDM tools
  • Good understanding of statistics and process control (SPC)
  • Detailed understanding of medical manufacturing process validations
  • Detailed understanding of the product development process
  • Detailed understanding of quality control systems
  • High level of competence in time management, technical writing, communication and organizational skills
  • Passion for delivering excellent customer service
  • Good general computer skills, including the MS Office suite of software
