About the Job:

We have an amazing opportunity for a Vice President, Category Management located ideally in Broomfield, CO but open to remote locations. Responsible for developing the strategic vision of the category management function and managing its execution. Build a center of excellence for category management that supports taking consumer and shopper data and building brand and customer-level insights that drive category growth. Ensure that category management insights are being analyzed, and incorporated into the BU category vision, and translated into customer-friendly category visions for the field to use. Oversee that category strategies, plans, and guidelines are in line with brand priorities across the portfolio.

Manage the central and field Category Management teams and work with the BUs to create category visions that the field can use with customers

  • Work with the BUs to package the BU category vision into something that can be presented to the field and use with customers (i.e. acknowledge the needs of the trade, present ideas in a customer-friendly manner, etc.) – this is the anchor on which to start the annual plans
  • Create a (national) category story that uses category management and insights to truly understand which levers to pull to drive category growth with customers
  • Oversee national planogram development process and approve final national planograms
  • Support Commercial Trade Marketing and BU in the creation of category and brand content to be shared at national and regional sales meetings
  • Participate in customer-specific category conversations and story reviews as requested

Lead category management with field teams and customers

  • Strengthen category captainship where present, and where not present, plan and execute other ways to influence the customer
  • Provide a strong say in how the category management org should be sourced to adapt to customer needs (e.g., not sharing the same office vs. involved in annual planning discussions, etc.)
  • Have the knowledge and be the guardian of the specificity customer by customer of how to run the category management function

Develop long-term strategies for category management and development

  • Develop the future vision of the category (e.g., organic foods of the future, coffee experience of the future), have a perspective on the long term trends and have a long term (3-5 year) strategy
  • Be up to speed and evaluate category technology enablers (e.g., virtual stores, automatic sell-decks, etc.) and contract necessary technology/tools for the organization
  • Work with brand innovation team to co-develop future category growth platforms (including innovation)
  • Engage in next generation concept development and category JBP initiatives
  • Partner with customer-facing teams to generate shopper and customer research initiatives that will bring “Insights to Action” and lead to business building opportunities for us and customer

Build the category center of excellence

  • Continue to develop the category management leadership team with the category leaders in the field and center to create a category community and develop the long-term plan for the org (e.g., people moves, etc.)
  • Support shopper and customer research initiatives that will help identify category management opportunities for the company and customers 
  • Understand path to purchase/other shopper insights that drive category growth
  • Define monthly and quarterly category management performance metrics (e.g., AWOP, Penetration, Frequency) and oversee that these metrics are being tracked at all levels (customer, region, consumer, etc.)
  • Stay connected with the global to integrate category knowledge and best practices

Manage the Category Management team

  • Determine how the category management teams should be sourced and organized in order to best meet customer needs (i.e. some customers will want a wall between the sales organization and category organization, while some customers want category management to be at the table at sales meetings)
  • Build and maintain strong culture within team
  • Set and communicate clear objectives for the team and individual team members
  • Support Sales Directors to think through their Category strategies

Grow and develop your people

  • Identify, recruit, and retain a balanced and diverse team based on member/candidate strengths and role fit supported by relevant knowledge, skills, and experience
  • Work with Sales Training/Enablement team to identify and address individual development needs of the field Category Management teams across functional (technical and analytical) skills
  • Provide the foundation for team effectiveness by creating and maintaining team processes
  • Apply training and coaching effectively for individual and team development
  • Complete performance evaluations for direct reports

About You:

  • You have a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Business or equivalent experience.
  • You have at least 10 years of experience with a combination of HQ and field sales roles within CPG industry
  • 7+ years Category Management experience in CPG industry
  • 5 years minimum in a team leadership role
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve breakthrough results through the course of work
  • Strong team leadership and management skills – demonstrated ability to attract, develop, and maintain high performers
  • Ability to travel 15-25% of time. More basis location
